This is the first post of what I expect will be many where I struggle to figure out whether I should use person first language or not.
I earned my undergraduate degree in special education where it was drilled into me that the students who I teach are people first; therefore, I should use person first language. I looked at it as a wondrous way of keeping students from being hard on themselves about having a disability. I heard the word “disabled” with a shudder every time. It just sounds so wrong, even now. So, now I ask myself, why is that?
It is the connotation of that particular wording of the word (If that makes sense). I say that because saying “he has a disability” is separated. But that doesn’t make sense…grr face! This is not fully resolved yet.
